Waxing Kara

Kara Brook is the founder of Waxing Kara. She’s an artist with a fascination for beeswax. Kara paints and sculpts with encaustic. Encaustic is paint made with beeswax, tree resin and pigment. Though you may not have heard of it, it’s actually been around a really long time. Encaustic art dates all the way back to ancient Egypt. Kara found herself going through so much beeswax she decided to take up beekeeping. She liked the idea of a sustainable art form, one that came from the earth into her hands. And once she learned about bees and how important they are to our environment, she poured as much passion into her bees and the eastern shore honey they produced as she did for her art. That’s how Waxing Kara was born.

Hey, y’all! My name is Sekayi. I started hand-pouring candles in August 2015 as something to do while recovering from a hysterectomy. I set up shop in my kitchen, made a few here and there, and gave them to my neighbors and co-workers. I enjoyed the process and loved, even more, to hear how people enjoyed them in their homes. I wanted to honor my mother, Gloria Brunson, who transitioned at the young age of 47 and called my new candles GLORY B. I never would have guessed the journey that was to come.

My hysterectomy proved to be life-changing—setting me on course to remembering the best of me. The part of me that is constant...that is peace... that is matter how the winds of life blow. I began a meditation practice and the process of candles became meditation time for me. I loved to wake early on a weekend morning while things were still quiet and make batches of candles. The intentions, affirmations and prayers assisting me in my daily life began to extend into my candles. I crafted an intentional line of aromatherapy candles and melts inviting the candle lover to set intentions to: BE calm, BE clear, BE focused, BE inspired, and BE refreshed. I primarily sold GLORY B candles face-to-face at local craft shows and then unloading what remained to my loyal friends and family through social media posts.

I’m a Virgo and a creative being so new ideas are always coming up. I have made and sold a variety of things: arm-knit scarves, ottomans, polymer clay earrings, wood burned jewelry…and so I decided I wanted to offer more than the signature scented candles! I didn’t want to be restricted to just those intentional scents many BE statements could I really come up with?? In 2019 I decided to rebrand GLORY B to SO BE IT.  I wanted to explore different vessels, all of the yummy fragrances, and satisfy my creative itch by creating other handcrafted goods! Under SO BE IT I’ve included hand-stamped tea towels, body butter and body oil, candles that were poured into handmade cement vessels, and wooden cups that were then wood burned with patterns and stained.

Ashley had become a nurse right out of high school at the age of 19 and has been a nurse for the past 12 years. She currently works as a charge nurse on an Orthopedic/Neurosurgical unit at the University of Miami Hospital. She loves being a nurse and says the best part is when after a long and stressful day she’s able to make an impact on someone’s life. She lives in Miami, Florida with her husband and they are expecting their first baby. They started their company afierosi with the idea of selling a product that was environmentally friendly and that they could use year-round in different seasons with family and friends. Thus they came up with the afierosi tumbler.
